Alexander Armstrong Twitter: Pointless host reacts after family flag up show answer | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Pointless host Alexander Armstrong, 49, firstly reacted to a Twitter user who said they were the grandson of the late actor and comedian Lionel Jeffries. The latter, who died in 2010, was mentioned in a category about noisy films alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Cruise. Alexander told guests his narrative in CBeebies show Hey Duggee is “largely based” on Lionel Jeffries’ role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He then did an impression of the actor’s deep voice, prompting the guests to laugh.

Following this, the Twitter user shared a picture of his grandad’s name mentioned on the screen with Alexander looking at it. They wrote: “Pointless is my favourite!

“And then this happened… So touched by my grandpa’s mentions & thanks so much to the great @XanderArmstrong for being so kind about him (The wonderful Lionel Jeffries + the impression [crying with laughter emoji). Very cool x.”(sic)

Alexander responded to his tweet, calling Lionel one of his “heroes”.

In view of his 408,000 followers, he replied: “Your GRANDPA!! One of my all-time comedy heroes.

“The Two Way Stretch is possibly the funniest film ever (and LJ is the comic highlight – no question) so thrilled to hear from you!!”

Lionel’s son Ty Jeffries, a composer, also praised Alexander for his impression of Lionel.

He wrote: “@XanderArmstrong thank you so much for your very kind words about my late father Lionel on your wonderful show.

“Thrilled he’s in such good company! Every good wish x Ty.”

Alexander replied: “I adored that brilliant man!! Not only the glorious comedy but The Railway Children too!!”

Ty responded: “You are very kind indeed.

“I am trying to keep the side up… following in his footsteps… in kitten heels!”

Elsewhere, last month Alexander hinted he felt “under appreciated” in his other job at CBeebies, in which he narrates loveable dog Hey Duggee.

One Twitter user said the presenter is “massively under appreciated” in his role on the show.

They commented: “Could be just me but I think the work of @XanderArmstrong as narrator of @HEYDUGGEE is massively underappreciated! #AWoofWoof.”

Alexander appeared to agree with the latter’s comment, replying: “Hear hear!!!” followed by a thumbs up emoji.

Another user wrote: “The only acceptable response from Xander is ‘WOOF!’”

Pointless airs weekdays at 5pm on BBC One.
