Hello! Welcome to your daily roundup of whatâs going on in pop culture.
What was your favorite celebrity Halloween costume from the weekend? There was something psychically perfect about Rita Ora dressing up as Post Malone, and Harry Styles as Elton John is good promo for next summerâs biopic (starring Taron Egerton). No evidence yet on Heidi Klum, who tends to do the most every year. Thank you to all the readers who sent photos of their own costumes to email@example.com, I loved seeing them and would love to see more!
1. Are Apuâs days numbered?
Last week, the TV producer Adi Shankar told IndieWire that âmultiple sourcesâ at âThe Simpsonsâ said they were dropping the Indian-American character Apu, voiced by Hank Azaria. One of the showâs executive producers, Al Jean, tweeted that Shankar âdoes not speak for our show,â but didnât address Apuâs future, which has been in question since a 2017 documentary raised criticism that the character is racist.
2. Watch Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell spar
The director Felix Van Groeningen narrates a scene from âBeautiful Boy,â his drama about a father (Carell) and his drug-addicted son (Chalamet). The pair meet in a cafe for what Groeningen calls âan incredible tennis match where you see these two actors at the top of their game.â
3. A radical comic-book artist
âItâs not hyperbole to suggest that Julie Doucetâs comics changed history,â writes Anne Elizabeth Moore in The Paris Review. Whether or not youâre familiar with the French-Canadian artist, this is a beautiful ode to her trailblazing work.
4. Hip-hopâs big shots
If youâre looking for a moment of joy or surreality, watch Tilda Swintonâs dogs frolic on the beach to a Handel aria. Swinton co-directed this video, and the really good stuff starts around the four-minute mark.
