Naga Munchetty, 43, has apologised for mispronouncing the word Wisbech – a small town outside Peterborough – on BBC Breakfast.
Speaking about a police incident in the town, Naga said: “A driver who hit speeds of up to 139 miles per hour while fleeing police has been jailed for 21 months.
“Rimell Taylor led the 12 minute chase on the A47 in Wisbech in Cambridgeshire. He was convicted of dangerous driving and driving whilst disqualified, over the limit and without insurance.”
Collins English Dictionary states online it should be pronounced ‘wiz-beach’. Naga pronounced the word ‘Wis-beck’ during the news item.
It wasn’t long before fans of the show started tweeting the presenter, making sure she was aware of her mistake.
Clive Barchan tweeted: “Naga it’s pronounced Wisbeach not Wisbeck… the BBC pronunciation department failed on that one! #wisbech #pronunciation.”
Sarah also tweeted saying: “Morning! Just to let you know that it’s pronounced Wis’beach’, not Wis’beck’.
“Hair looks great today by the way!”
Naga tweeted back at the fans: “My fault – misread – sorry.”
One cheeky fan replied saying: “No problem.. at least it’s wasn’t in Deopham or Wymondham.”
Naga had to apologise to both Sarah, 36, and viewers for the technical gaffe.
“We have to apologise, Sarah, while you were doing your forecast we had a little bit of a technical glitch, the gremlins came out and there was an odd shot so we didn’t get all the graphics fully for about 15 seconds, so sorry about that.
“Sorry of course to our viewers as well.”
Charlie chimed in: “Yes, you saw the studio, just us here waiting for the weather to continue. We will rule out any further gremlins.”
