His daughter Debbie Dingle (played by Charley Webb) was in love with Joe (Ned Porteous) and was distraught by his unexplained disappearance on the ITV soap.
However, little does Cain (Jeff Hordley) know that it was really Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) who finished the job and murdered Joe on Emmerdale.
But Jeff soon tells Debbie what he thinks he did after the pressure gets too much.
It unfolds as Cain goes to identify a body the police believe is Joe’s.
Debbie is understandably very distressed by this and it soon leads to Cain’s big confession.
Now, the stars behind the roles have revealed how the characters react to the revelation.
And it looks as though it could cause a huge rift between them.
Cain star Jeff revealed to TV Times: “Moira tells Cain to go out to clear his head, because he’s had such a horrific day after ID-ing a body.
“He goes to the garage and Debbie’s there, and that’s when it all spills out. He sees how upset she is.”
The news of course comes as huge blow to poor Debbie, who can’t tolerate being around Cain in the aftermath.
Charley spilled: “At the garage, Debbie’s saying, ‘This is how my life’s going to be. Every time there’s a body that could be Joe’s, I’ll have to identify it, until one day it might be his.’
“So Cain just blurts out what he’s done. The shock hits her. She can’t stay in the same room as him.”
But Debbie does find out that Graham knew about it all and is left reeling by the series of admissions.
Cain doesn’t mention Graham when he tells Debbie what happened, but she finds out all about it when she goes to Home Farm.
She will feel betrayed by her father and it may feel like her whole world is caving in.
Can she ever forgive her dad for what he has kept from her?
It could be that what Cain had done may be unforgivable for Debbie.
But viewers will just have to wait and see.
Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
