Game of Thrones: George RR Martin updates on Winds of Winter progress | Books | Entertainment

Last night the first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones premiered. With the story of A Song of Ice and Fire ending in just five episodes time, the narrative of Martin’s books are now well behind the TV show. The 70-year-old shared the main plot points of his ending with the showrunners even with two more novels to go in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. It’s been eight years since A Dance with Dragons hit bookshelves, and now Martin has given an update on the long-awaited penultimate novel.

Speaking with ET at the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere, Martin was reluctant to share a release date.

The author said: “I have no date. I’ve given up giving dates because I give one and then I miss it and everyone gets mad.

“It’ll be done when it’s done.

“[Writing on The Winds of Winter] has been going very well lately, so knock wood.”

Martin continued: “I wished I finished it four years ago. I wished it was finished now. But it’s not.

“And I’ve had dark nights of the soul where I’ve pounded my head against the keyboard and said, ‘God, will I ever finish this? The show is going further and further forward and I’m falling further and further behind. What the hell is happening here? I’ve got to do this.’

“I just got the [Fire and Blood] copy and, holding it in my hand, it’s a beautiful book. The illustrations by Doug Wheatley are great.

“It’s been a long while since I had a new Westeros book and nobody knows that as well as I do.”
