BBC and HBO drama Gentleman Jack has been a hit with audiences since it premiered earlier this year. Gentleman Jack is based on the diaries of real-life figure Anne Lister, a lesbian in the 19th Century who lived on her own terms and refused to conform to society’s expectations. The opening episode of Gentleman Jack was watched by 5.1 million people after it launched and a rating of 8.1 on IMDb.
Will there be another series of Gentleman Jack?
Gentleman Jack scored a renewal for a second season back in May, a mere month after it debuted in America on HBO.
Sally Wainwright, who wrote the series based on Lister’s diaries, said of the recommission: “It’s so exciting that so many people have had such a positive response to Suranne’s exuberant performance as the brilliant, life-affirming Anne Lister and to Sophie’s beautiful performance as her courageous partner, Ann Walker.
“I’m utterly delighted that we’ve been recommissioned, because there are so many more big, bold stories to tell about Anne Lister and Ann Walker. A massive thank you to the BBC and HBO and to everyone at Lookout Point.”
Lead star Suranne Jones added: I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey.
“We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out. A huge thank you to the BBC, HBO and Lookout Point for giving us our second series.
“It’s such amazing and positive news. I love working with the brilliant and talented Sophie Rundle and can’t wait to create some more Lister and Walker moments with her too.”
When will Gentleman Jack season 2 be released?
Gentleman Jack doesn’t have a release date as yet but we’ll update this article once the BBC and HBO confirm an air date.
Season one of Gentleman Jack aired on HBO in America on April 22, a month ahead of Britain. BBC One then started airing the period drama on May 19.
If these dates are anything to go, season two of Gentleman Jack could air in America ahead of the UK.
Both broadcasters aired the show on a weekly basis, so there will be no mass drop like Killing Eve.
Season two is expected to consist of another eight episodes like the first run.
Who will be in the cast of Gentleman Jack?
Doctor Foster, Coronation Street and Scott & Bailey actress Suranne Jones will be reprising her role as the vivacious and irrepressible landowner Anne Lister.
Joining her will be Peaky Blinders and Bodyguard actress Sophie Rundle as Lister’s wife Ann Walker.
Also likely to be returning will be Gemma Whelan as Marian Lister, Gemma Jones as Aunt Anne Lister and Timothy West as Jeremy Lister.
Other cast members who could return are Peter Davison, Amelia Bullmore, Vincent Franklin, Shaun Dooley, Joe Armstrong, among others.
What will happen in Gentleman Jack season 2?
Season two’s plot will be dependent on the outcome of the first run which will be concluding tonight (Sunday, July 7).
However, Gentleman Jack is likely to carry on with the life and times of Lister as she seeks to make her mark on Halifax, West Yorkshire.
The second series will also continue to explore her relationship with Walker after the pair committed themselves to each other.
Fans of Gentleman Jack could also see the second run delving into Lister’s past and perhaps her life before she met Walker.
Gentlemen Jack concludes on BBC One tonight at 9pm
