They are called FODMAP foods, and nutrition experts have discovered they are culprits behind many occurrences of bloating.
So how does this work, and should you avoid these foods?
What are FODMAPs?
FODMAPs are found in five types of sugar, and they all attract water within the body.
This causes bloating, and is a problem for many people with gut issues such as IBS.
These sugars are fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans, and polyols. They are found in different types of foods, but generally it can mean fruit, dairy, alliums like onion and garlic, and legumes are off the menu.
Bloating and gas are not only uncomfortable and potentially embarrassing, but can result in a swollen midsection, causing suffers to feel unattractive and look large.
If you notice that these foods are making you feel bloated a FODMAP diet eliminating these foods may help.
However, it is wise to take to a doctor before you drastically change what you eat.
A number of people swear by this, including former Victoria’s Secret model Tyra Banks and actor Kristen Dunst.
A diet book has also been written about the subject, titled “Healthy Gut, Flat Stomach: The Fast and Easy Low-FODMAP Diet Plan”.
Written by Danielle Capalino, a New York dietitian, promises to help with a flat stomach.
The author claims: “There are a lot of myths about beating stomach bloat and getting a flat tummy, but the FODMAP approach has been scientifically proven to work for both.”

There are a huge number of foods considered FODMAP. Here are some of the main offenders
Vegetables and legumes
- Baked beans
- Ripe bananas
- Spring onions
- Cashew nuts
- Eggs noodles
Most dairy foods are also FODMAP.
