N.Y.C.F.C. Out After Loss in Relocated Game

Alejandro Pozuelo converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute — his second goal of the game — and Toronto F.C. beat top-seeded New York City F.C., 2-1, on Wednesday night in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference semifinals.

Playing without striker Jozy Altidore (quad) and defender Omar Gonzalez (hamstring), Toronto advanced to face the winner of Thursday night’s Philadelphia-Atlanta game on Oct. 30. The game will be Toronto’s third Eastern Conference final in four seasons.

Pozuelo scored in the 47th minute by intercepting an ill-advised headed backpass to the goalkeeper and sliding his shot inside the post. On the winner, he sent Sean Johnson diving the wrong way with a chipped shot down the middle.

Ismael Tajouri-Shradi had tied the score for N.Y.C.F.C. in the 69th minute, sending home Maximiliano Moralez’s cross at the back post.

The game was played at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, instead of N.Y.C.F.C.’s usual home at Yankee Stadium, which had to be kept available for the main occupants as they made an M.L.B. playoff run. While the Yankees were eliminated last weekend, the complicated preparations for the soccer game had already forced New York City F.C. to commit to playing elsewhere.
