Fans were left distraught this week as hugely popular sci-fi series The Expanse was cancelled and there has since been a massive outpouring in support of its renewal.
The past week has seen dozens of shows cancelled across various networks.
The decision has shocked many considering the show has a 100 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a huge following.
Season three will finish up mid-July.
President of NBCUniversal Chris McCumber released a statement announcing the cancellation which stated: “The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television.
“Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision.
“We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”
Can The Expanse be saved?
It is possible that The Expanse could be either renewed or picked up by another network, namely Netflix.
The show’s production company, Alcon Entertainment, announced that they intend to pitch it to other networks.
“We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy,” Alcon’s co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said in a statement.
“We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”
In the meantime, some dedicated fans even purchased an aeroplane banner with the message: “Save The Expanse” and had it flown over Amazon Studios in California.
A petition with over 96,000 signatures is running on Change.org and many celebrities have pledged their support also.
Game of Thrones Writer George RR Martin tweeted: “Just saw online that SyFy has cancelled THE EXPANSE. It’s a damn shame, especially for fans of space science fiction… of which I count myself one. It was the best space show on television, far and away. I hope its producers can find another home for it.”
Lucifer, Designated Survivor and Quantico all got the axe this week with fans starting various campaigns to get them either renewed or picked up by other networks.
Comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a beacon of hope for many fans after it was renewed following a huge outpouring of support online.
Lucifer fans are now doing the same with #SaveLucifer doing the rounds on Twitter.
So there is hope for The Expanse yet.
