The moment unfolded as contestant Alan was on course to win £32,000 on the ITV programme.

However, there was one question standing in his way.

Jeremy Clarkson asked: “What type of wild animal is an ibex?” with possible answers being A. Goat, B. Pig, C. Hare or D. Deer.

Alan wasn’t sure however, and phoned a friend to ask him for an opinion.

His plumped for “deer” on the advice of his pal and Jeremy agreed with the decision.

Jeremy confidently announced: “I’m not even going to look at the screen as I tell you you’ve just won £32,000.”

The audience began to clap the contestant, but Jeremy looked aghast as he turned toward his screen.

He questioned: “Is it not a deer?

“Oh no, you’ve just lost.”

He then appeared to ask those behind the scenes if they’d got it right, he asked: “Are you sure?”

“I’ve seen ibex jumping along and they look like deer to me.”

The presenter then revealed that the actual answer was goat.

“It’s a wild goat found in the Pyrenees,” he clarified.

Alan then joked he was glad he hadn’t used the Ask the Host option on the question as Jeremy would’ve got it wrong.

Those watching at home couldn’t believe what had just happened and took to Twitter to comment.

“B****y hell, that was awkward @JeremyClarkson Great TV though! #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire,” one viewer wrote.

Another stated: “#WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire oh my god that was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. Poor guy.”

“Oh my god how awkward was that #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire,” a fan exclaimed.

A fourth added: “That was beyond cringe #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire.”

“Jeremy Clarkson. That blunder. Holy S**t. #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire,” a fifth declared.

Sadly for Alan, he went home with just £1,000.
