The Scottish meteorologist has spent more than 20 years at the BBC and continues to front some of its biggest shows. She is the lead weather forecaster on BBC Breakfast, the broadcaster’s Wimbledon coverage, The One Show and more. But in a candid confession, Carol revealed the damning toll of such a demanding role.

Carol first joined the BBC as part of their secretarial reserve in the Nineties before working in different sections and falling in love with meteorology.

She trained with The Met Office and presented forecasts on The Weather Channel before returning to the corporation.

The 58-year-old rose up through the BBC’s ranks and admitted she considered BBC Breakfast her “dream job”.

Carol has been at the helm of broadcasts for decades but has regularly revealed her fears about being replaced

Some fans seem to agree after a petition was launched to keep her on TV, where she was described as “the best weather presenter” three months ago.

Another comment from last month said Carol “was a huge, positive influence during lockdown” and branded her “the best of a good bunch”.

However, emerging weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans is tipped for a bright future at the BBC and some claim he could get Carol’s job.

Earlier this month, one fan branded him the star’s “heir apparent” after watching his broadcasts during the weekend.

Owain, who rose to fame on Welsh TV, is currently the host of BBC North West Tonight and does occasional shifts on other shows.

They include weekends on BBC Breakfast, which he started in February, where he is quickly becoming a popular name.

After his first broadcast, fans took to Twitter to lavish him with praise and positive remarks.

One support wrote: “Loving the new happy, happy weatherman.”

A second tweeted: “Worth watching the programme for you @BBCBreakfast loving @OwainWynEvans on breakfast news.”

And a third, who tagged the official BBC Breakfast Twitter account, wrote: “Such a cheerful and upbeat update… More of him please.”

Since then, Owain’s fans have speculated that he could be in line for the top job at the BBC.

In the past, Carol has frequently stated that she would not leave her role without a fight.

In a 2016 Radio Times interview, Carol explained: “If they showed me the door, I’d hang on by my fingernails.”

Prior to that admission, Carol said she was concerned about “thousands of younger girls who will kill for my job” – nine years ago, when she was 49.

In 2012, she told the Scottish Sun: “And I know the clock is ticking down for me.”

At the same time, Carol has also spoken about the difficulties of working on BBC Breakfast – including when she admitted to regularly feeling “sleep-deprived”.

She told the Radio Times that it was like having “permanent jet lag” due to her extremely early wake-up call.

Carol wakes up before 3am on weekdays in order to be ready for her first weather forecast after 6am.

She also expressed concern about how viewers perceived her appearance – as she grows older on screen before their eyes.

In 2018, Carol told the Radio Times: “Perhaps I’m under a little bit more pressure because I’m on the telly.”

The pressure stemmed from ensuring her hair was “neat”, her make-up was “OK” and she was “not having a fat day”.

To keep herself trim, Carol revealed she regularly goes to the gym and is also a keen runner.

She added: “I tried to be healthy… When I put on weight, it’s annoying, but I try to get it off.”

Despite her difficulties, the BBC veteran is regularly bombarded with praise on Twitter.

On Thursday, one fan wrote: “Looking fabulous Carol… Enjoy the rest of your day.”

A second tweeted: “You look absolutely ravishing this morning Carol in your light purple dress, you are as beautiful as the weather is today.”

Even after a gaffe, where Carol accidentally called BBC star Ben Thompson “Dan” – referring to Dan Walker – she was praised on Twitter.

One wrote: “So easily done… I’m sure that Ben will forgive you.”

A second added: “Carol, your reaction was the best comedy since ‘Morecambe & Wise’. How can you be any more attractive!”

Carol Kirkwood stars on BBC Breakfast, which airs from 6am on BBC One.
