Queen ‘always carries on’ says Gayle King

The CBS anchor delved into the Queen’s life, and how her future without her late husband Prince Philip will be shaped, as part of a new TV special. Her programme came just months after the broadcaster delivered Meghan and Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, who Gayle claims is her best friend. The hour-long broadcast looked “at the Queen extraordinary life and reign”, while reviewing some of the “challenges and controversies, romance and heartbreak” that have come during her illustrious reign.

The 66-year-old is well known for her closeness to Royal Family through her relationship with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which was demonstrated after she spoke out following their interview.

She told the public that Harry and his brother William had spoken after the interview had aired, but talks between the two didn’t go anywhere near addressing the issues raised during the chat.

But prior to Harry and Meghan’s landmark move to leave their senior royal duties last year, Gayle detailed how the couple would likely live a less “traditional” life while members of the Firm.

As the world waited to find out news of Harry and Meghan’s first arrival, Archie in 2019, Gayle was given access to see the baby, alongside other selected members of the British media.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Gayle noted how their life could now be formed following the arrival of Archie.

She said: “I think the beauty of what Harry and Meghan can do, because it’s highly unlikely he will be king, they can really live a different kind of life.

“They’re still part of the Royal Family, they love being part of the Royal Family and all that comes with that, but I think it also gives them breathing room for things that aren’t traditional.

“Listen, nothing about their relationship is traditional, and I think that’s a great thing.”

Fast-forward a year and Harry and Meghan announced they wished to lead a “financially independent” life away from the royals.

Since then reports of a rift between William and Harry have continued to dominate discussion, particularly after the Duke of Sussex claimed his brother and father Prince Charles were “trapped” within the monarchy.

Tensions deepened as details from a call between Harry and William emerged after the interview, with the Duke of Cambridge concerned that their conversations would now never be private.

After his interview, William reportedly spoke with Harry, but Gayle alleged the conversations were not productive.

This led a source close to William to confess that the future monarch was worried “that anything he says to his brother will be plastered over American TV”.

It is unclear when the supposed row between the dukes began, but historian Robert Lacey argued it was down to Charles to heal the wound, something he is expected to do today.

Speaking last year, Mr Lacey told US Weekly that Charles was the “obvious person to create or encourage their reconciliation”.

He continued: “He hasn’t come into the picture as we know so far…[but] that is one possible channel for reconciliation.

“I’d rather hope that behind the scenes, Charles is at work mending the fences [and] building the bridges.”

Mr Lacey argued that the siblings’ relationship is nearly beyond repair, and wrote in the 2020 book Battle of Brothers: “Both brothers have been damaged by their upbringings; both have reacted by finding different solutions.

“There is so much pain and trauma in this story, going right back to the beginning.”

He added that if the two can’t reunite it will become a “potential tragedy” for Harry and William, adding: “This compares with Edward VIII’s abdication in 1936 and the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

“It’s of that scale. And it’s a challenge that’s yet to be resolved.”
