Jeremy Clarkson defends Rishi Sunak after he’s mocked over awkward hammer gaffe | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

has spoken out in defence of Prime Minister after he was mocked following the release of a viral video that showed him using a hammer on its side.

The PM held the tool in an unusual way as he tried to help make a piece of jewellery during a meeting with small business owners in Farsley, West Yorkshire, last Thursday.

The clip showed him sitting next to Emma White, owner of The Emma White Jewellery Studio in Sunny Bank Mills, and bringing the hammer down with little effect as she told him to “come on”.

While Mr Sunak received plenty of mockery online, Jeremy explained why he felt people were being unfair on the politician in his new column for the Sun.

Under the headline “The PM Nails It,” the presenter wrote: “People mocked Mr Rishi this week after video footage emerged of him using the side of a hammer rather than the end.

“Many said it was his Ed Miliband bacon sandwich moment,” Jeremy added. “But no.”

Ed Miliband resigned as the leader of the Labour Party after former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron beat him in the 2015 general election.

It has been speculated that one of the reasons for his being defeated was due to how his public image was crafted, with one particularly unflattering photoshoot that saw him tucking into a bacon sandwich often cited as a major contributing factor.

However, Clarkson explained why he felt that Mr Sunak’s viral hammer video was not on the same level as Milliband’s unfortunate sarnie blunder.

“Speaking as a man who has spent many years working with hammers and who knows this is the true tool of a gentleman, I can assure you using the side is more sensible than using the end,” Clarkson argued.

“It’s bigger,” he pointed out. “So you’re less likely to miss what you’re aiming at.”

Many people to took to social media to tease the PM after the awkward clip went viral online, including Former Tory minister Nadine Dorries.

Reposting the clip to X, she wrote: “Nooooo way!! What is he doing? Is this the first PM ever who has never seen a hammer, or paid for petrol, or filled up his own car?” (sic)

While the Labour Party posted the video with the caption: “Man who hammers working people can’t use a hammer.”
