Strictly Come Dancing: Oti Mabuse reveals Kelvin Fletcher had to calm her down in training | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Strictly Come Dancing has continued to be one of the BBC’s most popular shows since it commenced back in 2004. The latest series saw Oti Mabuse crowned the winner alongside her partner Kelvin Fletcher. Speaking on The One Show tonight (January 10), revealed the reason Kelvin had to “calm her down” in training.

After being in the final back in 2016 alongside Hollyoaks actor Danny Mac, the professional finally saw herself crowned the Strictly champion last month alongside ex-Emmerdale star Kelvin.

The pair wowed throughout the process with consistently impressive routines, which saw themselves become popular with the public as well as the judging panel.

They beat off close competition from EastEnders’ Emma Barton and CBBC presenter Karin Zeroual as they became winners last month.

Oti has seen her career go from strength to strength as Strictly is not the only BBC show the dancer has been featured on.

She currently has a role as a Dance Captain on Saturday night show, The Greatest Dancer, which also saw her come out on top last year.

Tonight, she appeared on The One Show speaking to hosts Patrick Kielty and Alex Jones to speak about her role on The Greatest Dancer.

The hosts wasted no time asking her about her win on the dance contest as Alex remarked: “You’ve done it all, 2019 was the year for Oti wasn’t it!

“You won The Greatest Dancer, you won Strictly, you presented this show [The One Show], which one was the highlight? Careful of your answer now Oti.”

Oti then added: “To win Strictly I just feel there were a number of blessings, I felt really really good for the whole year.”

As Alex then quizzed her on what she enjoyed most about her time with Kelvin, she confessed the reason why her partner had to calm her down during rehearsals.

Oti said: “I enjoyed most of all the training, I think the training was just being in the room and putting our minds together and really pushing ourselves.

“There was be days where we’d come up with something and I’d be like, ‘I need more, I need more… I need better’

“He’d have to calm me down, the fact we had each other to really motivate each other, I love that… just working hard,” she noted.

There was a surprise in store for Oti as Kelvin had secretly recorded message for his partner during his absence from the show.

Alex explained to the audience: “Kelvin couldn’t be here tonight because he’s in rehearsals for the tour but he did have this little message…”

She looked shocked as the videotape of her partner rolled: “Hi guys it’s Kelvin, I’m just about to start rehearsals for the Strictly Come Dancing live arena tour.

“But before that, I just wanted to say a quick thank you to you Oti for the most incredible experience of my life. Winning Strictly, lifting that Glitterball with you was just the most unforgettable experience, and I’ll be forever grateful. So thank you immensely from the bottom of my heart,” he gushed.

The One Show continues on Monday at 7pm on BBC One.
